Summer Fun Among the Gardenias

This gorgeous fairy is Summer from Simply B Stamps, she comes in two versions and today I’ve got a card featuring the eyes closed version.  She was the freebie for this month’s challenge on the Simply B Fan Page.

I’ve put her on a card following a sketch from Sweet Sketch Wednesday.  The Fan Page challenge also called for a background you had to make yourself from something other than a stamp.  I’ve made mine using a Spellbinders’ die, a Cuttlebug folder and some embossing powder.  I tried a few other techniques but all I ended up with was three sheets of ruined paper and blue inky fingers, that said, I do like how this one turned out.

Off You Go Then

A colleague left today, someone I’d worked with for some years now, who I sat next to and who, as someone older and more experienced, I turned to for advice and guidance.  He took a redundancy package so I had some warning he was going and therefore had time to make him a card as a fitting send off and here it is featuring Pipper from Simply B Stamps.

With a look like that she worked perfectly for a card with attitude, which was exactly the right card for my colleague’s sense of humour.  Here’s what the card looks like opened out.

And this one shows the “lever” action, which I made following a tutorial by Laura Lipe at Splitcoast Stampers.

Now I’m not sure if the final part of the sentiment is too “endearing” for the Smart A#$ challenge as part of the Simply B Stamps birthday challenges but I’m entering this over there just the same.  After all, Piper is Corinne’s all time favourite SBS image and she did tell me I couldn’t enter with my “too sweet” sentiment and everyone knows stirring Corinne is half the fun of the Fan Page!

Merry Christmas in July

I’ve had this image, Merry Betty, from Simply B Stamps coloured since Christmas last year but just never got around to getting her on a card.  I was so late with my Christmas presents for friends overseas that I was embarrassed to send them in March so decided I’d send them for the traditional Australian Christmas in July.  Well it’s late June and I only just got the card done on the weekend and the gift in the mail, nearly missed this one too!

I headed over to the 52 {Christmas} Card Throwdown site for some inspiration, the current challenge was to use some pearls so I raided my trim stash for some pearl trim and added some pearls to Betty’s hat to cover the spiders (not sure if the Japanese friends this is heading too would appreciate a Steampunk type Christmas card!).  The layout is from the CTMH cardmaking kit the papers are from, it’s good to have all the colouring matching taken care of by professionals and the layout designs help too.  I did make my card larger than the sample though although when it came to paying postage today I did regret that choice!

Through the Looking-Glass

There’s a whole foursome of Steampunk Wonderland images over at Simply B Stamps and, as I just love Alice in Wonderland, I am naturally loving these stamps.  My last post featured Wicked Little Alice and this one features her good twin, Curious Little Alice.

I tried to create a looking-glass effect with a piece of acetate, not sure it really worked.  I ran it through my Grand Calibur machine which embossed rather than cut the shape but that was fine as it meant I could create a bit of a gilded edge to my looking-glass.  Unfortunately I didn’t have the right colour Staz-On so I used both red and black and then topped it with some gold ink, I’m thinking I should have done this border out of a solid piece of cardstock and then layered that over my round piece of acetate looking-glass.  Ah, well, you live and learn!  To create the glass effect I tipped some B00 ink from my Various Refill bottle on the back of the acetate and spread it with some paper towel, it’s a bit hard to see in the picture but in life it gives the image a slightly bluish tinge.

Although the BG paper has a black base I think the gold tones along with the bright colours I’ve used on Alice give this a much lighter feel than my Wicked Little Alice and this could easily be used for a birthday card, even for a child.  Just goes to show the versatility of the images, even the Steampunk ones, over at Simply B Stamps.

In making up my card I had in mind the looking-glass effect but am not so great with the layouts so I followed a sketch at Sketch Saturday where the current challenge let you pick a sketch from a range of past sketches, I found Sketch #250 suited the look I wanted perfectly.  I also followed the recipe at Our Creative Corner to help with my embellies, I used lace and ribbon, metal and inked my looking-glass.  I’m also entering this into the Squirrel and the Fox’s Use Something Metal challenge (my metal key charm covers that) and Crafty Friend’s Use a Charm challenge.
