…sometimes you almost feel like you can see the notes dance up there on the stage

Sharing a special card I made for my goddaughter who is turning 13 featuring stamps from 49 and Market, Penny Black, SugarPea Designs and, as the main image inside, Ballet Practice from Mo’s Digital Pencil.

The first picture shows the card closed and below is a picture of it open displaying the Mo’s Digital Pencil image.

Now you might have guessed my goddaughter is a bit of a dancer, oh, and her favourite colour is purple.

Over at Frilly and Funkie they are asking you to be inspired by a technique or tutorial you found online.  I wanted to make something special for my goddaughter and was first going to go with an exploding box card.  But while I was looking for the tut for one I’d bookmarked I found this card, described as a box card, in my bookmarks from Karin Heiloo of Karin’s hobby, as featured on the Studio Light blog.

We won’t talk about the first piece of cardstock I ruined cutting the second cut wrong or the second piece that was so off square the card wouldn’t shut properly after being cut and scored.  Let’s concentrate instead on the beautiful Maja DP I found in my stash and layers of purple that look so lovely on the brown base.

The sentiment on the front is from the Sprinkles and Smiles set by Penny Black and the ballet shoes are in the Gabi’s Haute Couture set from 49 and Market.  They were stamped on watercolour paper in VersaMark before being embossed in beautiful White Satin Pearl powder from Hero Arts.  I then coloured the paper with Tim Holtz Distress Inks in shades to match my papers.  I was inspired to use this technique by the current challenge at Just Us Girls and I think it works beautifully on this card.

It’s really hard to see in the photo but I also added some stars from the Caring Hearts set from SugarPea Designs in Iridescent Sparkle embossing powder from JudiOKins to represent the stardust from the quote.  I added the same stars coming off the dancer’s hands to tie the image to the front of the card.

At Allsorts they are looking for projects marking milestones with numbers.  As this card is for my goddaughter’s 13th birthday I wanted to add her age to it so die cut the digits from the darker purple cardstock I used and added them to the top of the box.

Finally, to finish the card and hold it together I dyed some silk ribbon with the same Tim Holtz Distress Inks I used to colour the front of the card and the dancer’s clothes.  It was a bit of a challenge to cut the slits for the ribbon through the multiple layers, I have all the same layers repeated on the back so it’s finished as I have my message on the back.  Threading the thin silk ribbon through the slits was also not fun but the silk ribbon was the only choice to echo the ribbons on the ballet shoes.
